A Berlin Summer City Break Guide

Warmer weather and longer daylight hours make summer the perfect season to explore Berlin. One of Europe’s most exciting metropolitan destinations, the German capital is full of history, dining and attractions for adults and children alike. But it’s a lot of ground to cover and easy to get overwhelmed by choice. To make the most of your next Berlin city break this season, we’ve rounded up the list of easy, authentically local options for little moments of magic on a perfect sunny day.

Get a taste of tradition at Berlin’s oldest biergarten

Prater Biergarten is a must-see piece of history you can enjoy with the whole family. Serving local beer and bratwurst since 1837, it’s a walk-in-only space lined with beautiful chestnut trees and plenty of area for kids to play while parents can relax in the sun. An ideal place to chill in the afternoon and experience Berlin like a local.

Watch the sun rise or set from a roof terrace

Nothing feels better than stopping to watch the sunset after a long day. How about a summery evening and a wonderful sunset or even sunrise breakfast on one of Berlin’s many roof terraces? Simply unwind and switch off with an unmissable view. Try Deck5 Beach Bar or Klunkerkranich in Neukölln—soon be among your favourite spots day or night.

Indulge in the city’s most popular dessert

From classic dairy to vegan alternatives, ice cream is undoubtedly Berlin’s favourite sweet treat on a hot day. The city’s ice cream parlours offer something for everyone, from fan-favourite classics like strawberry to unusual delights like pistachio or Danish liquorice. We suggest Hokey Pokey in Prenzlauer Berg, Mitte or Pankow (expect a queue, but it will be worth it) or Tribeca in Kreuzberg and Prenzlauer Berg for sugar-free vegan options handmade with natural ingredients.

Spend a day outdoors in Tiergarten

Berlin’s answer to New York’s Central Park, Tiergarten covers nearly 519 acres, bordering several of the city’s biggest attractions including Postdamer Platz and the Brandenburg Gate. It also boasts a zoo, an aquarium, a rose garden and more. Whether you prefer to take a walk through on your way to famous landmarks or make an entire day of your trip to the park, you shouldn’t miss it.
